As we age, the eye's natural lens, which focuses light onto the retina, becomes less flexible and loses its ability to accommodate for near vision. The eye is no longer able to focus quickly between foreground and background or between near and close objects, causing burry near vision (presbyopia). For instance, we may notice we need to hold the newspaper far away to focus on the words. Most people adapt to presbyopia by using reading glasses or getting bifocals if they already wear glasses every day. Reading vision surgery is also an option.

Whitten Laser Eye is an industry pioneer with LASIK, and is now doing the same for reading vision correction procedures. With this expertise and innovation, he currently offers the following procedures to reduce or eliminate the need for reading glasses:

  • Blended Laser Vision Correction
  • Refractive Lens Exchange

These procedures offer “ReNewed Vision," allowing patients to see up close again – to read text messages, a computer screen, or the time on their watch without reading glasses. In fact, after reading vision surgery, many patients can read as well as when they were young again, without losing distance vision.

Blended Laser Vision Correction

Blended laser vision correction is a sophisticated treatment that uses LASIK laser vision correction techniques to achieve near and distance vision at the same time. With this blended process, our providers get the eyes to accommodate for both near and far vision naturally.

Blended laser vision correction increases the depth of each field of the eye, optimizing the dominant eye for distance and intermediate vision and the non-dominant eye for intermediate to near vision. Because both eyes see the intermediate range, the brain can “fuse” images between the eyes, similar to binoculars. The eyes work together to provide good vision at all depths without glasses.

Blended Laser Vision Correction is performed in the office and generally takes less than 15 minutes.

Refractive Lens Exchange

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) provides dual benefits for the aging eye. During the surgery, we will replace the eye's natural lens with an artificial lens, similar to cataract surgery. This advanced, artificial lens corrects any existing nearsightedness, farsightedness and poor reading vision. As an added benefit, it also eliminates the patient’s inevitable future development of cataracts.

At Whitten Laser Eye, we offer patients the latest technology and most advanced lens options available, including, but not limited to the RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens, AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® Trifocal Lens, TECNIS Synergy™ IOL, TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL and others that also correct astigmatism.

Our team of specialists will work with each patient to determine the optimal lens for their specific vision needs and goals.

Free Reading Vision Consultation

Whitten Laser Eye offers a free consultation to determine what procedure is best for you. At your initial appointment, we will evaluate you for our reading vision correction procedures to ensure your eyes are healthy for surgery.

Your initial consultation is approximately 30 minutes. You will have a thorough qualifying eye exam and a detailed discussion about the procedures. We will use various instruments and computers to gather hundreds of eye measurements, including:

  • Topography measurement that provides a 3-D reconstruction of the front and back surfaces of your cornea, creating a very accurate ‘map’ of your eyes.
  • Precise test that determines the thickness of your cornea.
  • Evaluation of your general eye health.
  • Calculation of your exact prescription.

If you are a good candidate for surgery and would like to continue, you will meet with one of our providers at a pre-operative appointment. We will use the testing information to create a customized approach, tailored to your eyes. Throughout our process, you’ll have the advantage of a board-certified ophthalmologist working for you and our team to create a personalized treatment for your unique pair of eyes. You won’t find this kind of experience at other laser centers.
