Cataract surgery can restore vision loss due to cataracts. After Dr. Whitten removes the cataract, the cloudy lens of the eye, an IOL or intraocular lens implant is placed in the eye. This lens is a permanent fixture that helps your eye to focus.

Whitten Laser Eye cares deeply about the visual outcomes for our patients, and offers the latest technology in Premium Multifocal Implant Lenses. These implants provide you with options never before available to cataract surgery patients. Once you understand what a cataract is, how it will be removed and the new life-changing benefits cataract surgery can bring, you’ll wish you’d had the procedure sooner.

Once it is determined that you have cataracts, Dr. Whitten will work with you to decide when they need to be removed and which type of Intraocular Lens (IOL) is best for your visual needs. There are three basic types of IOLs, each designed for a specific corrective function. These types are:

  • Single-Vision (Monofocal) IOL
  • Premium (Multifocal) IOL
  • Toric IOL

If you receive a Single-Vision IOL, the lens’s focus will be set for distance. Single-Vision implants do not have a wide range of focus. Instead, they are able to focus on only a single point. This means that you will be able to focus on objects that are far away. However, you will still need glasses for intermediate and reading vision.

The newer Premium Multifocal IOL is designed to correct a range of vision – near through distance. In most cases, the Premium Multifocal IOL lens can eliminate your dependence on glasses or contacts after cataract surgery for distance, intermediate and reading vision. Patients are experiencing vision better than ever before in their lives with this lens.

The Toric IOL is used for the reduction of astigmatism. Astigmatism is a common condition that may cause blurred vision. This exclusive IOL can maximize surgical results by treating astigmatism during cataract surgery. Approximately 20 percent of patients who need cataract surgery have a clinically significant degree of pre-existing astigmatism.

The actual cataract surgery is the same for Single-Vision, Premium or Toric IOLs. Medicare and most insurance plans cover the cost of surgery for Single-Vision Implants. For Premium and Toric IOLs, there is an additional charge which many patients find well worth the cost in exchange for the freedom from glasses or contacts. The Whitten Laser Eye staff will review all of this information with you.
